River Restoration Action Team

Become a River R.A.T. and join the River Restoration Action Team to help restore streams and wetlands in the Gallatin Valley!

This volunteer position is perfect for those who want to take direct action and develop skills in ecological restoration. By making a regular commitment, your efforts will make a lasting impact on the health of our watershed. Be like the small but mighty muskrat, a scrappy, dedicated rodent that humbly plays a keystone role in stream and wetland ecosystems.

COMMITMENT

  • Volunteer for a minimum of 4 events per season

  • Events last 3-5 hrs and are hosted throughout the spring, summer, and fall

  • Most events are on Thursdays 1–4:00 p.m., with occasional weekend and evening opportunities

  • Attend a required hands-on volunteer training on April 9 or 10 from 1:00–4:00 p.m.

  • Sign the acknowledgment of risk waiver

ACTIVITIES

  • Harvest and stake willows, plant trees and shrubs, and seed grasses and wildflowers

  • Build Beaver Dam Analogs and Post-Assisted Log Structures

  • Control weeds, spread mulch, and maintain plantings and fencing

  • Wrap trees with protective fencing to mitigate beaver conflict

  • Help lead volunteer crews in the field by mentoring participants and ensuring work is completed safely and correctly
